Veteran Trainer's Views of Bos Murphy

Les. M.

Murphy)

Expects New Zealander to Give Patrick a Hard Fight

(Special — From

WELLINGTON, This Day. Bos Murphy has established himself in his class among the elite boxer-fighters New Zealand has produced in a decade. Such was the general opinion expressed after he had pummelled Vic Caltaux to submission in the twelfth round of the professional welterweight title bout at the Petone Recreation Ground last Saturday. Bos gave an exhilarating display of his real eapabilities and never at any stage of the fight looked like giving Caltaux the opening he longed for. Opinions vary as to his prospects against Patrick.

New Zealand has produced some splendid boxing talent in the professional ranks in the past, but the forecast is that Murphy is going tc prove the best welterweight of them all, said an ex-professional champion and veteran trainer, when giving his views on" Murphy last night. "He is gifted with scientific boxing talent, nimble footwork, a remarkable reach, coolness and the ability to mix it when the occasion arises, as he examplified against Caltaux," said the veteran. "What a snappy stinging left that boy owns! It is the most effective left r have seen a youth of his age possess in many years. And what a load it carries bohind it! I am sure that had Caltaux not crouched so much the fight might have been , over bcfore the sixth round, as Murphy was patiently waiting every round to get that wicked left to the plexus, a patience whic-h was eventually rewarded in the eleventh round. Where others had failed to pummell Caltaux's liead to groggi- j ness young Murphy had succeeded, , which stamps him as a boxer- ' fighter of extraordinary ability. He ' is going to prove himself a great ; asset to New Zealand in the boxing ■; world — that is if he intends to venture further aficld. As for the match against the Australian welterweight c.hampion, Vic Patrick, I think the Hutt Valley boy wiU stand his own ' well, and you might think me over,

• optimistic in expressing such a view, ' but I confidently think that Murphy ! will give Patrick the hardest fight i he has yet experienced, and I would I not be surprised if thet New Zeaj lad clinched the fight. No doubt j many of your readers will think me i over-confident in expressing such a 1 view, but do not forget that we have yet to witness the real eapabilities of Murphy, and a fight like the one , against Patrick is sure to bring out | the very best in the lad," he con- | cludcd. Murphy's stance, he said, I reminds him of that of Jack Dempsey's — "It is a real Dempsey shape ! and guard." Murphy Ilas The Reach Compared with Patrick, Murphy has an advantage in reach of If inches, he is 4/ inches taller and is 81b. heavier. Here are their mcasurements : Murphy: lieight, 5ft. 11 inches; neck, 15 inches; chcst, 41 J inches; reach, 73.1, inches; weiglit, lOst. ■31b. ; age, 21. Patrick: height, 5ft. 61 inches; neck, 15 inchcs; chest, 40 inches; reach, 72 inches; weight, 9st. 121b. ; age, 26. Bemand For Reseiwations So great is the interest being taken in the forthcoming welterweight match between Vic Patrick, Australia, and Bos. Murphy, New Zealand, on April 20 .Easter Saturday;, at the Petone Recreation'

ground, that application for ring-.-..de seats have been pouring in tc the Hutt Valley Boxing Associatio; from all parts of the Dominion evesince the definite date of the bout was announced. So keen is the demand, particularly so in the past few days, no doubt as a result oi Murphy's brilliant success against Caltaux, that the bookings are fiiling rapidly with the fight three weeks away. Given fine weather it is expected to prove one of the grsatest drawcards ever experienced by a Boxing Association in New Zealand The Tete Sarron — Tommy Donovanj bouts were the best drawcards j previously experienced in Dominion boxing.
