CHESS CHAMPION'S DEATH
CHOKED WHILE EATING STEAK Received Thursday, 1.15 p.m. LISBON, March 27. An official authomy reveaied that the world chess champion, Dr. A. A. Alekhine, ohoked to death! Intimate friends stated that Dr. Alekhine preferfed to dine . alone, and he never used a knife or fork. He died in a hotel bedroom with three inches of beef steak lodged in his thro'at, and clutching the remainder of the steak in his right hand. Dr. Alekhine died in Lisbon on March 24. He was born near Moscow on October 19, 1892, and he acquired the title of master at the age of 16 in a national tournameno at St. Petersburg. In 1927 he won the world championship from J. R. 'Capablanca, 6 — 3 and 25 draws. In ; 1935 he lost the title to Dr. Euwe. iDr. Alekhine was a capable blindjfolded player, and wrote the book "My Best Games Of Chess," •'which ■has been described as one of the imost valuable expositions of modern master play extant. This is the first time since th§ World Chess Federation came into being that a world champion has died while holding the title.
