HORSE SPORTS AT OTAKI
1 A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING 1 The Otaki and District Horse Club ] beld its sports on the Otaki race- ] Axurse on Saturday in perfect weather, and in the presence of a large gathering of enthusiasts, a gather- , mg that no doubt would have been ^ sonsiderably larger had tnere been ( no races at Awapuni. The gather- , ing is the first held for some years, the club having been in recess on account of the war. Thanks to a number of willing | and energetic workers, the man- . agement was of a high order, and ] oilicials are to be congratulated on the success of their efforts. In'Miss Ngaire Fogden the club has an active secretary, and on Saturday she had the able assistance of Messrs. Savell, Hillas and Galloway. Mr. "Chap" Bills was an able announcer . and over the loudspeaker gave interesting particulars of the events. The judges and other officials are deserving of credit for the able manner. in which they worked, The Boy ScQuts supervised the refreshment department and are to be commended on their good work. They did well under the able supervision of Mr. Rule, the Scout chairman, and his helpers. Following are the results: — Musicai chairs, horses to be ridden by children 15 years old or under: J. Gray's (Kitty) 1, L. Mansell's (Bonny) 2, D. Bradbury's (Gay) 3. The contest was a keen one between .twelve- entrants. The Maiden jumping competition, catch weight, was keenly contested, and there were no less than 23 competitors. The jumping was pf a high order, pleasing to all, and in this event, as in others, the judges had a difficult task. W. Swensson's Mischief was adjudged the winner, G. Vickers' Glen second and B. Barbery's Taupunga Lass_ third. Others who competed in this event were: J. Taylor's Pickpocket, A. Denton's Major, D. C. Biake's Meg, W Bills' Mallesh, T. Mansell's Bonny, H. T. Morrah's Nero, A. A. Denton's Dolly, A. Brooks' Nigger, J. Morrah's McBeth, L. McBeth's Highgate, R. H. Bryant's Ranger. J. McBeth's Waitohu Princess, M. Hillas'. Stockade, C. Robinson's Major j J. McBeth's Star, A. Hakaraia's Dierius, L. Bennett's Ranger, A Keeling's Miss Jane, B. Lumsden 's Light. Tea and M. White's Lark. The ' jump-off between the placed horses was a good one, all horses doing splendidly. Maiden pony jump, for children under 15 years: G. Vickers 1, L. Mansell 2, J. Grey 3. Pony jump (open) : G. Vickers Merrylegs 1, L. Mansell's Peter 2, J. Gray's Kitty 3. There were nine pntries.
Intermediate jump, for horses that have ndt won more than two jumping competitions at any show or sports: A. Denton's Dolly 1, Mrs. W Bills' Joker 2, B. Barber's Taupunga Lass 3. There were sixteen entries, among those taking part being D. Biake's Meg, H. Tilbury's Skipper, L. McBeth's Highgate, R. Bryant's Ranger, B. Preston's Bill, P. Elliott's Lady Thomond, A A Denton's Major, L. Bennett's Ranger, J. Taylor's Pick-pocket, B. Lumsden 's Light Tea, J . McBeth s Waitohu Princess, J. Proctor's4 Glen and G. Vickers' Glen. The contest was a good one, resulting in a jumpoff between Elliott's and Barber's horses. . . Maiden pony jump, ponies 13.2 hands and under, to be ridden by children under 12 years: G. Vickers 1, L. Mansell 2, M. Mense 3. Turning Competition: M. White's Lark 1, A. Denton's Gay 2. Heats were won by M. White, L. McBeth and A. Denton. Pony walk and gallop, for ponies 14.2 hands and under, ridden by children under 16 years of age: B. Preston's Victory 1, Brian Bills '( Jim 2, M. Mense's Diana 3. Seven competed. A good flnish. Open jump, for the Quinn challenge cup, minimum weight 11st: T. Mansell's Glendowie 1, J. Taylor's Horrible 2, W. Swainson's Countess 3. Also competed: C. Lutz's Golden Beauty, A. Denton's Major, H. Tilbury's Skipper J. Taylor's Pickpocket, Mrs. W. Bills' Joker, P. Elliott's Lady Thomond, L. Bennett's Ranger, G. Vickers' Lady Gay, L. McBeth's Star and J. Proctor's Golden Glen. This was a splendid exhibition of jumping, the old champion, Glendowie, now 23 years old, again winning the cup. He jumped in great style, making no mistakes, but the runners-up were also tip-top jumpers. This is the second time in succession that 'Glendowie has won the trophy, and at the conclusion of the event Mr. L. G. Lowry, M.P., after stating how pleased he was to be present at the gathering aaid that he had pleasure in handing over the Quinn cup, and in doing so heartily congratulated the young rider (Lindsay Mansell) on his win. He considered the horse a wonderful one. In conclusion, Mr. Lowry congratulated the club on its meeting and wished it success for many years to come. (Applause). The winner returned thanks. Open walk and gallop, four furlongs : G. Everton's Hikorangi 1, P. Whiteman's Thoraco 2, A. Hakaraia's Dierius 3. Also started: J. Taylor's Nissus, D. Campbell's Sherry, A. Winterburn's Wineyard, L. Bennett's Ranger, B. Lum* den's Sally, G. Enoka's Marston and S. Enoka's Tremello. . Children's nag competition: Colff Biake's Nimble 1, L. Mansell's entry 2, Brian Bills' Jim 3. There were
sixteen entries and competition was keen. Ladies' jumping competition: J. Taylor's Horrible 1, P. Elliott's Lady Thomond 2, W. Swainson's Countess 3. Also competed: M. White's Lark, A. Denton's polly and H. Tilbury'. Skipper. Competition was keen, all horses jumping splendidly. Open flag race: Bruce Fogden 1 Mrs. Tilbury 2. A keen competition well won. Open walk and gallop, six furlongs: G. Everton's Hikorangi 1, J. Puti's Acrobat 2, S. Enoka's Tremollo 3. Also competed: L. Bennett's Ranger, J. Taylor's Nissus, D. Campbell's Sherwood ForeSt, T. O'Rourke's Condescension, B. Fogden's Sally and A. Winterburn's Wineyard. Hikorangi and Acrobat made the running and finished off with little to spare between them, Tremollo just beating others for a place. Pony walk and gallop: Brian Bill's Jim 1, B. Mansell's 2, M. Mente's 3. There were five starters, but the winner won nicely. Consolation jump: S. Denton's Dolly 1, G. Vickers' Lady Gay 2, B. Barber's Taupunga Lass 3. Alsc competed: H. Tilbury's Skipper, D. Biake's Meg, J. Swainson's McBeth: L. McBeth's High-gate, H. Keeling's Miss Jane, C. Robinson's Major, J. Proctor's Golden Glen, J. Taylor's Pick-pocket and J. McBeth's Waikohu Princess. This was a good competition and caused keen interCst Children's flag race: Colis Blake 1 xBrian Bills 2, Peter McBeth 3. Gretna Green (novelty) : Mrs Tilbury and C. Lutz. Competitors in this event had to gallop, change riders, gallop back, unsaddle, anc ride double-backed to the winning post. Champion hack: Mrs. Tilbury's Skipper 1, G. Vickers' Lady Gay 2 There were ten entries and eact horse deserved a prize. All were oi a fine stamp, and sliowed that careful attention had been bestowed on them. The judge's task was' a diffi. cult one, but his verdict was popular. Best girl rider. — Under" 10- years: R. Mansell. Over 10 years: Jill Snel 1, Joan Burgess 2. During the day foot races were held for the children, who derivec1 considerable pleasure from them. Hunt Club It is expected that the first run in. connection with the club will be held during Easter. A sports gathering will also be held.
