Discussing the inerits of Phar Lap. Ajax and Bernborough ai'tei; the lastr named had won the Puturity Stakes recently, MeGrath stated that Bernborough "could eat" the other pan over a short distance. MeGrath said that Bernborough was the galloper of the eentury and confessed to liaving the biggest bet of his life on the horse when he won the Puturity. "They talk about Phar Lap and Ajax," said MeGratli, "but wfiat about Amounis, whom I rate beiter than either of them. Even thep, I would hesitate to take on Bernborough with him." "Amounis used to mow them dotrn, " said MeGrath, 'but I'm not sure th-at Bernborough hasn 't a more withering finish, beeause wheri he overhauls the leaders he goes on and beats them.by bigger margins than did Aijiounis.
