HOW MISTAKE WAS DISCOVERED
Mr. A. J. Gilmer, owner-tTaiiier of Blnck Beret,. was hosing down his liorse after the running of the _ Taranaki JStakes wheu a racing entkusiast approached and pointed out tkat'ke could still win the race. The Te Rapa visitor was satisfied that he kad lost the race, but wlien it became generally known that Gressida had not carried her correct weigkt the protest was entered which led to the disqualification of the winuer. But by that time the dividends had been paid out according to the judge 's placings. It may be recalled that a similar sensation was narrowly averted at Trentham in 1933, when Goldeu Wings, owiied by the Manawatu sportsman, Mr. C. T. lveeble, won the North Island Challeuge fStakes. Golden Wings went to the post earrying the weight shown in the race book vyhich did not allow H'or a 51b. penalty he had earned. It was only due to the alertness of an ofiicial, who recalled the horse two minutes before the start of the race, that prevented his subsequent disqualification.
