THE LEVIN AERODROME

"1950,"

Sir, — What benefit are the ratepayers of Levin going to get for the expenditure of £100 granted amqually ro the Levin Aero Club? After perusing the interesting repoft of the discussion in your issue of yesterday, Sir, I cannot see any refurn oi' the money given to the club in the way of landing fees, etc., at all., -Would it not pe better for the council to buy the land outright, cpnstruct a hangar which woqld be suitable to house at least four planes of the ten-pa§senger type, with an up-to-date workshop attached, and give the club flying rights over the field at a moderate rental, Then when Levin is incor--porated in the air services of the Dominion we will possess an aerodrome municipally-owned, with as good facilities as any to be found outside the main centres. Thus, while assisting the club to establish itself, ratepayers in the ye&rs to come would be draw'ing .revenue in the form of landing fees, etc., from the passenger planes visiting the airport. The council is to he congratulated on its assistance tojihe aero club, but it wants to look forward to the time when passenger and transport planes will be landing here as regularly as the trains are leaving at the present time. Levin is the logical place for the planes to call at, a fact borne out as recently as last Saturday. A plane was unable to land at Wellington and proceeding on to Paraparaumu found similar conditions there. it returned to Wellington and in trying to land there met with a mishap. At that time conditions in Levin were moderately clear. So, gentlemgn of the council, will residents of the town}in hve yegrs time be able to say, "Why did not our Mayor and Councillors look ahead, and make provision for all these planes that want to call here?" In conclusion, Sir, I wish to pay tribute to the Levin Aero Club fqr brmging this matter before the public and council. I hope citizens will give the club their support by voting for a loan for the building of a municipal airport if the council places one before them.— Yours, etc,,

Levin, March 20.
