Building Activity During the month of February eight permits of a total value of £9,830 were issued by the Levin Borough Council for new buildings. No permits were sought for alterations and additions. Welcome Home Speaking at last evening's meeting of the Levin Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. H. B. Burdekin) said that he was arranging a welcome home function to Levin servicemen who had returned recently from service overseas for April 11. A large number had arrived home since the last similar function, and he voiced the hope that all councillors and their wives would attend.
No Surplus Books The aiificuity experlenced by New Zealand booksellers in getting supplies from overseas, is explained in a recent communication from a London publishing house. "It is still the case that the edition of every novel is used up entirely when published," the letter states, "so that | there are no stocks on the shelves | for repeat orders. This state of •things will continue for a very long time until paper supplies are more plentiful." Abattoir Killings The stock slaughtered at the Levin Abattoir during February was as follows, the figures for the corresponding period of last year heing given in parentheses: — C'attlfe" 596' (619), sheep and lambs 3692 (4947)-, pigs 526 (51), calves 156 (140) and potters 6 (nil) . The fees for the month totalled £938 15s 6d as cornpared with £574 19s lOd in Febru- ( ary, 1945. "For various seasonal reasons there is usually a drop in killings at this time of the year," commented the manager (Mr. F. B. Larsen) , "but this year the drop is being, and 1 hope will continue to be, offset to a large extent by the lifting of the restrictions on the sale of pork."
Quotas Attained Deposits to National Savings during last week received a further fillip, especially in the country offlces. Three centres recorded over four figures, Feilding leading off with the fine total of £1236 8s. This was followed by Ashhurst with £1136 16s, and Woodville £1130. Other offices got good average figures, and the district total reached £5206 11s 4d. The offices reaching their weekly quota were Palmerston No.rtli, Apiti, Ashhurst, Bulls, Dannevirke, Feilding, Foxton, Halcombe, Kimbolton, Levin, Manakau, Pahiatua, Pongaroa, Rangiotu, Rangiwahia, Sanson, Weber, Weraroa and Woodville. The fine total recorded by Ashhurst enabled this office to exceed its annual quota by a substantial margin, makino twelve for the district. Rubbish in Town Area Criticism of the unsatisfactory conditions existing in the business qr brick area of Levin in regard to rubbish was made to last evening's meeting of the- Levin Borough Council by the health inspector (Mr. W. J. Guinan) , who recommended the enforcement under Part V; Section 26, of the borough by-laws the enforcement of the keeping of a regulation receptaele for holding refuse and rubbish. It was resolved that the section be enforced and that building and house owners in the brick or business area, provide and keep a reg- ; iulation rubbish receptaele. The | matter of having the appropriate receptacles available for purehase ; by fhose concerned was referred to ; the engineer (Mr. K. W. Sand- : ford) . Demands on Mayor i ' The increasing demands being | made on his time were referred t© : 'by the Mayor (Mr. H. B. Burdekin) ; at a meeting of the Levin Borough ; Council last night and he appealed to burgess.es to be a little less exacting in their demands,. partieularly ' over the next tw.o or .three months. j 1 As the .council's representative ,on' j the Levin Rehabilitation C.ammittee : he spent an average of two hojirs daily on that work, which at present I was important and large in ! . extent. Many of the smaller mat- ' iters brought to him " should be ■ : praffered to the appropriate ■ borough offieers, who could give an i i immediate answer, whereas he , .eouldNnot mahe*a promise abpufc something to fcnew not'hing about. ; He would still attend to all matters which were properly his, and gtye: ! them expedi&ous and earefnl •gpnr: sideration.
