MAORI GATHERING AT OTAKI
VISITORS WELCOMED A very pleasant function took place yesterday afternoon at the marae, Otaki, when a distinguished guest in the person of Lieut.Colonel Henare, leading officer of the Maori battdlion, was met by members of the Mauapoko tribe, who assembled in good muster, and. led by Mr. Dan, Rikihana, extended a warm welcome to the guest'. Speeches were made by Mr. Rawiri Tatana and Mr. Utiku Hapeta, on behalf of the Ngatiraukawa, and Mr. Maro Kopa. Wiremu, on behalf of the Mauapoki tribe. Ja.nie te Keepa, te Whatanui and Lieut.-Colonel Tau Henare replied, and items of a pleasing nature followed. Mr. Romeo Kingi, Mrs. Peti Taueki and Mr. Honi McMillan were warmly thanked for their assistance in the gathering, and after a very successful and enjoyable day the party left intending to visit the various maraes. Porirua is the next place to visit, then Wanganui, New Plymouth and down the East Coast settlements. Although hurried, the arrangements were capably carried out by those in charge.
