D. (J. Sullivan) in opening the annuai conference of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation. - Referring to the activities of manufacturers during the war, Mr. Suliivan said that there were many occasions when he had able with pride and eonlidence to announce that New Zealand could furnish particular items of miiitarv equipment or munitions, scientilic apparatns and food and clothing of a type or on a scale which not so many years ago would liave been thought by most people to have been impossible for Dominion loeal industries. Throughout iny pubiic lit'e 1 have been a strong advocate for the development of manut'acturing industries in this country." The delegates were welcomed by the Mayor of Timaru (Mr. A. E. S. Hanan) who paid a tribute to the spiendid con- ■ tribution to the war eff'ort of New Zealand agriculturists and manufacturers and their employees.
