CHRISTCHURCH, March 12. . H. Jones is sitting on top of a pole 40 i'eet- high in English Park. He niounted it at 10 a.m. todav and intends staying there for 100 hours, deseending at 2 p.m. on Saturday during the. i progress of a earnival. It was warm I and sunny todav and Jones looked reasonably comfortable. He has waterproof clotliing in ease the weather is wct. If he stayrs up 100 hours, he will get £20. If he does not, he will at least have li.vd a novel experienee. The pole was hired from the Municipal Electricity Department, being the longest that conld be found. Two small seats are affixed to the top, fac- ( ing in opposite directions, so that when | Jones finds the view in one direction monotonous, he car. turn his back on it and survey a new vista. He is visible from a bloek or two away. The Municipal Electricity Dopart.ment's longest ladder, "big bertha, " would go only to within a few feet of the top of the pole, and the rest was a precarious scramble. Food will be sent np by rope and pulley, and Jones has been supplied with a telephone. He has what he hopes will be enougli tobacco and readlng matter.
