RECORD FIELDS AND KEEN RACING

AFTERNOON SPORTS MEETING LEVIN CLUB'S FIXTURE With a hot sun overhead and a slight breeze, the Levin Combined Amateur Athletic and- Gycling Club held a grand victory sports meeting on the Levin Domain on Saturday afternoon. A large crowd witnessed many exciting rae.es, with several very close finishes. Record entries from seventeen different clubs gave the officials plenty of work in handicapping and compilingr th'e heats. Every' e-vent on the programme w-ent off smoothly, and was a eredit to> the work of tne club's secretary (Mr. J. H. . Cooper) and officials. Several falls odcurred in the cycling events. In the three-mile junior cycle, L. V'. Berrington, of Feilding, fell; he escaped -with abrasions, but his cycle was badly damaged. L. Ellery, of Levin, had uwo unlucky spills. In the final of the half-mile cycle he was well in the lead thirty yards, from home when his tyre rolled and he momentarily lost control of his maehine, c.ausing him to swerve and lose the. race. The second time he was moving up to take the lead when another cyclist swerved in front, forcing him to leave the track. The main event of the day, the nve mile "A" grade^cyrd6 race for the Ilickson Cup, was won by H-. Pidwell, of Wanganui, who started from nearly scratch. The previous holder of the cup was L. H. Hazel'wood, who started from the 95-yard mark, but did not see the distanceout. Just on twenty contestants, entered for this event, which was over 16 laps; several of the- riders failed to stay the distance. Pidwell, off 190 yardSj as soon as, he had caught the leaders, kept, a gpod position until half a lap from home, where he came to the fore to win in a great finish from H(. O. Laurie and J. A. Sparkes, both of Poneke. At the conclusion, the club's president (Mr. W. P. Cribb) presented the Hickson Cup to Pidwell and a miniature to L. H. Hazelwood, last year's holder, and also the Warnes Cup to A. G. Cozens, of Palmerston North, winner of the one mile open handicap, and a miniature to K. D.
