KOPUTAROA ROAD
TAR-SEALING REQUESTED At this month's meeting df the Hdrdwheriua County Councii a lfettfer was received from Mr. S. V. Kiisby and 2,9 others requesting that uhe Councii give favourable con.ideration to the tar-sealing-of the Koputaroa Road, ffdrii Rbatherlea to the Piaka Road. * It was pointed out that the road, always carried a iarge amount of trafiic, and was at cimes in a very dangerous condition. It was further suggested that the . opening up of the Kereru soldief settlement wouid result in a corisiderably increased volume of traiflc. The ehairman (Mr. G. A. Monk) said that members of the Couhcil Wfere in entire sympathy with the request ernbodied in the petition, which was similar.to the substaiiee of an earlier petition from residents of the Shannon East Road, He jaid that the v/ork should be pro:eeded with if thfe necessary finance vvas available,. and if the sanction of the Main Highways Board, which ooncricated a L'i to £1 subsidy in ,uch cases. couid be secured. He recommended that the matter .houid be referred to the works committee with direction to ascfercain the cost, and determine what 'action was desirable. He was per,onally prepared to approach the cesiddht . engineer of the Public Works Departriient to ascertain the prospect of a MaiiT Highways Board suboidy. The Councii was entirely sympathetic with such work 'arid y/ould explore all possi'oilities aS. td |5roseCtiting the same. It was resolved that the petition, tdgfethef wifch a previous petition frdih the settlers of Shannon East Road, be referred to the works -committee for a recommendation as fco what action should be taken.
