SPECTACULAR BLAZE IN DUNEDIN
DUNEDIN, Mareh 7. A spectacular fire gutted a section oi ihe works of British CheinicaJs Ltd., this morning, the damage to the buiJd ing, plant and stock being asscssed at ■iver £20,000. Tlie lire, which had evidently been in progress for sonie time, was lirst noticed by a passer-by in King Streel just bei'orc (j o'clock, anu when the brigade arriveil the fiamos were bursting througli the roof of tlie Lhree-storeyed building. The firm does an extcnsivo business in the production, oi' plastics and a large quantity of lughly-inflamiiialue material was stored on the pretuises. The six machines on the scene had no chance of saving tliis section of tiic works, but isolated the niajor part oi the premises, which are T-shaped. This part of the factory contauied iargc stoeks of chemicals, and had the ilunios reaclied it, nothing could have savco the works from complete destruction. Eighty employees were engaged in the section gutted, but will be absorbeu in the other departmeuts. The "ongin of tlie fire is unknown.
