CHRISTCHURCH, Mareh /. After having been a feature of dances in Ihe city for at least 20 years, Monte Carlo dances have been declared illegai by the police. Two dauee hali proprietors, Colin Campbcll and Hugh MeAlpine Evans, appeared before Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., on charges resulting from tlie incJusion of Monte Carlo dances in their programmes. Coliri Cainpbeir was charged with (1) disposing of two cakes and two bottles of wine bj* lucans of a lottery and (2) not being licensed to sell liquor, seliing two bottles of wine. Evans was cliarg ed with (1) disposing of twro sides oi lam b, two puddings, two cakes and 12 bottles of aie by uieaiis of a lottery anu (2) not being licensed to sell liquor, seliing 12 botlles of ale. The poliee stated that Oaiupbell and Evans offered prizes for the Monte C'aro dances which included liquor. The attitude of the Police Department was that to give a prize which included liquor was an indi'rect sale. Cainpbell pluaded guilty to seliing liquor, the other charge being with drawn. Evans adinitted ruumng a lottery, and the sale oi' liquor charge was with dra wa. Eac'h was cogvieted with uut pcnalty.
