— ^ SHANNON'S MONTHLY MEETING At the February meeting of the Shannon Women's Institute, Mrs. M. A. Pedersen presided over a good attendance of members. The treasurer reported the finances in a good position. Thanks were received from the Polish chil-v dren's camp for a parcel of frocks sent by Mesdames Sinclair and Swindlehurst. It was decided to make another wool quilt for a Bed Cross hospital, as requested by the Manawatu federation. After some discussion as to ways and means, it was decided to do the catering at the forthcoming horse- sports as requested by their committee if coppers and marquees were available. Mrs. Peni, of Koputaroa, then interested with a talk on side lights of the weleome home to the Maori Battalion in Wellington. Having a very active sense of humour, and a deep appreciation of the workers behind the scenes, Mrs. Peni made members feel that they were almosi viewing the scene, and was heartily thanked for her visit. The bloom competition resulted: Mrs. Cronquest 1,- Mrs. Easton . 2, and Mrs. H. Stern 3. The prizes for prettiest floral plates went to Mrs. Sinclair and Mrs. Bovis.
The next month's competition is a sponge cake made without butter, cornflour or arrowroot, and members were asked to bring old-fash-ioned family photographs for display. Members were finally reminded that committee day was the last date for handing in nominations for •the committee for tjie annual meeting tbis month.
