EVENING SPORTS MEETING D.espite the cold on last. Wednesday evening, there was a fair gathering at the sports meeting held at che domain, and as usual the events were keeniy contested, whiie Tiiost of the races' finishes were close. Boys and girls races were interestmg, while the wresciing bouts caused a good deal of entertainment, the young fry. enjoying every moment. During the evening the Otaki Brass Band enlivened pruceedings by well-played and popule.r selections. Results : — Half-mile cycle. — Hughes (20 yards) 1, Mathie (50 yards) 2, Jones (15 yards) 3. There were five starters, Parker (Levin) 40 yards, and Juju 65 yards, also competing. The race was a good one, but Mathie, riding strongly, was a comfortable winner. Open 100 yards handicap. — Hodges 1, Casey (Paraparaumu) 2 McKinley 3. Only starters, *but the race was a fine one, all breasting the tape within inehes of each other. Junior 100 yards handicap.Merwood 1, Edwards (Levin) 2, Hakaraia 3. There were thirteen starters but Merwood, off the two-yard mark, overhauled the other placed men to win a well-contested race. One mile cycle handicap. — S. Hughes (160 yards) 1, Bloomfield (scr.) 2, Parker (Levin) 60 yards 3. There were seven starters, the others being L. Hughes (5 yards) Jones' (25 yards), Juju (160 yards) and Mathie (130 yards). Hughes, Mathie, and Juju made the pace, but towards the finish Bloomfield moved -up, while at a latter juncture Parker made a good bid, but the winner rode a well-contested race. Ladies' '75 yards handicap. — Miss Bartosh 1, Miss Merwood 2, ]\4is? Williams 3. Five starters. A race well won. Open 120 yards. — Hodges 1, Casey 2, Webster 3. Four starters, McKinley also competing. The race was a good one, won by inches only. Junior boys 220 yards. — Hohipuha 1, Merwood 2, Raika 3. Ten start ers. A close finish. Two-mile cycle. — Hurley 1 Bloomfield 2, L. Hughes 3. Ther were six starters, Bloomfield being the scratch man, Jones (40), L. Hughes (50), Hurley (180), Roach (240) and S. Hughes (240) . Hurley and S. Hughes made the pace, then Bloomfield, Roach, L. Hughes and Jones were in order, but a mishap left only the placed men to finish.
