FORTNIGHTLY MEETING
w — SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Those present were: Mr. R. E. Downes (Mayor) and Crs. W. Clayton, R. Lind, J. A. Roach, H. Aitchison, J. Curran and C. Wishart. The town clerk (Mr. J. T.- Bovis) read a letter addressed to Mr. L; G. Lowry, M.P., from the district traffic manager, N.Z. Railways, advising that the representat'ion made by the town clerk in regard to the extension of the station platform, and the provision of additional lighting at Shannon, was being looked into, and the result would be advised later. The secretary of the Shannon R.S.A., in a letter, asked the Council to meet representatives from his association to discuss the matter of a suitable war memorial to m'en of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. The Council, in a previous meeting, decided to meet the representatives on February 25. On that date the secretary /of the R.S.A. had asked the town clerk to cancel the meeting as it would be necessary to call a meeting of the R.S.A; to .get its viewS: ori the matter. The Mayor stated" at the meeting that there was a remit before the municipal conference, to be held this month, to' the effect that the Government be asked to make a pronoupcement as.to its policy with regard to war memorials, and to ! give an indication as to what subsidies were to be paid by it. The Mayor stated that the matter of the conference should not be delayed, as the Council had already discussed the proposal and it intended to call a.public meeting and piuce the matter before the public. The Horowhenua Rugby Union were granted the use of the domain during the 1946 season under the usual terms. ,• x The town . clerk reported that there were no rate arrears, the ^mount outstanding for the current year rates being £34-9-7, which the Mayor stated was very satisfactory. Authority was given to the building committee to have repalrs carried out to the building in Stout Street and the domain buildings. Teiiders- are to be called for the painting of the Municipal Buildings and the fire station. It .was resolved tj notify the public that a .permit must first be obtained before lighting rubbish fires wlthin. the borough.
