DISTRICT' SUCCESSES In perfect weather and under jideal athletic conditions, th'e 31st annual meeting of the Oroua Downs j Sports Club, affiliated with the ; Piping and Dancing Association, I was held on Saturday at the Sports (Ground, Oroua Downs. Each even't was run off with precision, and no _ j gaps in the programme were allowled to dull the large crowd's interl est. The horse events were followI ed closely and there were no major ■spills to mar the general festivity ! of the day. Some horse „ entries ! j came from as far south as the Hutt |Valley. The cycling events were I the first since the beginning of the ! war and the entries were of a very | high standard. i The places in the running and ! :yciing events were almost entirely scooped by Levin and Otaki afchletes. Misses Merwood and Juhus, both of Otaki, were first and | -■ second respcctively in the ladies' 1 100 yards, while the former won 1 the 75 jrards maiden, Miss Lange j (Levin) was second and Miss Julius j third. The 75 yards open resulted jMiss Merwood 1, Miss Julius 2, Miss | Lange 3. Gordon (Otaki) put up | a fine running perf ormance to win | the men's 220, 440 and 830 yards i eveni.s and gain second in the 100. iHodges (Otaki) won the 100 yards and was third in the 220. Merwood (Otaki) was first in the 220 yards j primary school race and Mansell (Te Horo) 3. In the half-mile and one mile cycle events Bloomfield ; (Otaki) won the honours and also gained second in the two-mile coni test. Another Otaki cyclist, Hurley, ! was sccond in the half-mile and j third in the one mile. Competing in the horse events G. i H. Vickers gained two firsts and a , second, J. Taylor a first, a second and two thirds and D. C. Blake a | first.
