VALEDICTORY

FUNCTION TO FATHER BUCKLEY Recently the parishioners of St. Mary's Catholic Church gathered at the parish hall to say farewell to Father Buckley, who has been transferred to Island Bay, Wellington. Father Hendren spoke of Father Buckley's splendid work in the parish, and thanked him for hi co-operation and never-failing kindness. Father Venning supported the remarks of Father Hendren, adding a special word of thanks to Father Buckley for his generous help in the work of the Maori Mission. Mr. T. O'Rourke, who spoke on behalf of the people of the parish expressed the regret of the parish ioners in losing Father Buckley referring not only to his priestly work, but also to his kindly nature and happy personality. Father Quinsworth, chaplain of the R.N.Z.A.F. also spoke. Father Buckley, in his reply, said that he regretted leaving Otaki, but was obliged to move on at the direction of the ecclesiastical authorities. He thanked the people for their loyalty and kindness. He wished also to thank the civic authorities for their courtesy. He said he would not easily forget his years at Otaki. A short programme was presented by Misses P. Rolfe and M. Lawrie and Mrs. Gower. Supper was served and all took the opportunity of personally saying good-bye to Father Buckley. Father Reader, of Whangarei, has arrived to take over Father Buckley's duties.
