Rubbish order made
PA Auckland The Health Department has stepped into the Manukau garbage dispute by ordering the City Council to remove rat-infested heaps of rubbish bags. In a bizarre twist to the month-old dispute, the striking employees of the council’s rubbish contractor have offered to collect the bags free today. The South Auckland Medical |fficer of Health,
Dr Allan Cowan, yesterday decided to invoke his legal powers to compel the collection of rubbish deemed to be a public nuisance.
After complaints this week of rat infestations, Dr Cowan ordered the Manukau City Council, under the Local Government Act, to remove garbage from five sites in Otara and Whitford where rubbish bags »’ e
accumulated. He also required the council' to clean up any other areas where, he said, open or damaged rubbish bags may be creating havens for flies and rodents and have become a nuisance under the Health Act
Dr Cowan told , the council he was satisfied there was still no risk of infectious disease from the rubbish.
