N.Z. 'unfair about Aust. pensions’

NZPA-AAP Canberra The Australian Federal Government would try to renegotiate social security arrangements between Australia and New Zealand and Britain, said the Australian Social Security Minister, Mr Howe, in Parliament yesterday. Mr Howe said in debate on the Social Security (Proportional Portability of Pensions) Bill that some aspects of the arrangements between New Zealand, Britain and Australia were unfair.

The agreement with Britain discriminated against people in Canada, New Zealand and Australia as the pension paid by the British Government was not indexed against inflation, he said.

This represented a significant cost to the Commonwealth Government which had to top up pensions paid in Australia to Australian levels.

Mr Howe said the British Government would be approached about the unfairness.

The New Zealand agreement made no provision for portability of pensions for Australians in New Zealand, and some Australians in New Zealand were not receiving pensions. But, he said, the New Zealand Government did not appear to be willing to renegotiate the agreement at this stage.

The bill was passed all stages and will go before the Senate.
