$30,000 grant to rail group

Wellington reporter A Government grant of $30,000 has been made to the Weka Pass steam railway project to help the $153,250 plan to run a tourist steam train service along the former Waiau branch line between Waipara and Waikari.

The Minister of Tourism, Mr Moore, said the grant was the catalyst needed to boost tourism in North Canterbury. The Weka Pass Railway Society 1 plans to give North Canterbury the equivalent of Southland’s Kingston Flyer. The 203-member society hopes to have its steam engine “on line” by late 1987, and plans to

offer New Zealand and overseas tourists a nostalgic train trip through the limestone formations of the Weka Pass. It also plans a package for daytrippers from Christchurch. Mr Moore said the project would benefit local employment, as it was usual for every eight overseas visitors to generate a new job. The secretary of the society, Mr Neville Tobin, said the grant was a gesture of Government recognition and confidence in the railway. “We are delighted; it is more then what we realty hoped for,” he said.
