Woman chooses to sit, and peek
PA Auckland When two bank robbers told a 77-year-old woman either to lie on the floor, or sit, she chose to sit — so that she could get a description of them. The woman, Mrs Carol Lawson, describing her reactions during the armed robbery of the Epsom branch of the Auckland Savings Bank yesterday, said: “I kept peeping up from under my eyebrows, and by the time they left I had a good Idea of what they were wearing and what they roughly looked like.” She was. the only customer' in the branch at 11.30 a.m. when two bala-clava-clad men burst in armed with a shotgun and
a bayonet A male customer who entered seconds later also was ordered to lie or sit The manager of the bank, Mr Fred Pollock, said the man with the gun guarded the door while the other leapt the counter and waved the bayonet at the' four women tellers and demanded money. It is believed that about $50,000 was handed over from the teller drawers and the strongroom. Mr Pollock refused to confirm that such ‘an amount was taken, but he described it as a substantial sum. The robbers, described as Polynesian, wore fawn balaclavas. One wore sunglasses.
