Engineer wins two awards

A Christchurch lecturer in engineering has won two awards for a paper he co-authored on the effect of earthquakes on older reinforced-concrete buildings. Dr Nigel Priestley, a reader in civil engineering at the University of Canterbury, received the awards with his fellow researcher, Mr David Brundson, of Upper Hutt, from the Institution of Professional Engineers in Auckland on Monday. The awards were the Freyssinet Award for a technical paper on engineering structural design or erections and the Otto

Glogau Award for a tech-/ nical paper, “Assessment of seismic performance characteristics of reinforced concrete buildings constructed between 1936 and 1975.” As a result, the Ministry of Works will adopt the methods of assessment discussed in the paper. Among other awards presented by the institution was the rare F. W. Mac Lean Citation to Professor Alan Titchener, of Auckland. The citation is made from time to time to a member who is eminent in the profession and active in promoting the objects of the institution.
