Teacher stop-work meetings off

PA Wellington Stop-work meetings by secondary school teachers, called for yesterday, have been suspended. The president of the Post-Primary Teachers’ Association, Mr Peter Allen, said last evening that proposals to settle the teachers’ salary dispute would be presented to the Cabinet on Monday. The decision to cancel the planned stop-work meetings today followed from meetings over the last five days between the P.P.T.A. and Cabinet Ministers, he said.

Meetings were to have been held today in Southland, Wellington, Hutt Valley, and Canterbury. There were to have been the latest in a succession of meetings reflecting teacher dissatisfaction with progress in their pay claim. Meetings so far have indicated strong support for some kind of industrial action to support the claim. Mr Allen said the Ministers with whom the P.P.T.A. representatives were negotiating would present proposals to settle the salary claim to the Cabinet on Monday.
