N.Z. yacht third

NZPA staff correspondent Fremantle New Zealand's Chris Dickson, the boy wonder of . the world 12-metre championships, jumped on the French boots and all and came within an ace of stealing second place behind Australia 111 in the fifth heat of the series at Fremantle yesterday. In a thrilling, biting, dicing finish, Dickson and his men on KZS slugged it out with Marc Pajot, one of the heavyweights of world sailing, and almost pulled off another match-racing duel. But the Frenchman held on

to the finish and kept the New Zealander out at the gun, by just 34 seconds. Australia Ill’s victory put her into a clear lead on the championship table with II points, 6.1 clear of KZS, which still holds second. While the Australians must take full credit for getting to the front and staying there, the performance that caught the attention was that of KZS. Also forcing themselves back into the reckoning was the Canadian True North which is getting its act together and finished fourth, while Australia II was fifth, America II sixth, and KZ3 back in eleventh.
