P.M. criticised for yacht race start
PA Wellington The Hart organisation yesterday criticised the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, for accepting an invitation to start the third leg of the Whitbread yacht race tomorrow. Hart Aotearoa sent Mr Lange a telegram asking him not to start the leg because it would indicate support for apartheid sport. One of the maxi-yachts, Atlantic Privateer, was South African-designed and built, skippered and crewed by South Africans, flying an American flag of
convenience, said Hart’s co-ordinator, Ms Sharyn Jayne Seybome. The same yacht, previously called Kargo 111, competed in the last Whitbread race under the South African flag, she said. “The inclusion of Cape Town as the first port of call also strongly links this race with South Africa,” Ms Seyborne said. “Hart calls on Mr Lange to practise what he preaches by withdrawing his involvement with the yacht race.”
