Restaurant service may be disrupted

Service in restaurants, cafeterias, takeaway bars, and fast-food outlets may be disrupted if workers vote to take industrial action at a meeting in Christchurch on Sunday. An industrial campaign could follow the breakdown of the restaurant and the New Zealand Tearooms and Restaurant Workers’ award. Talks broke down when the union’s claim for a 30

per cent pay increase was turned down by employers offering between 17 and 19 per cent. The secretary of the Canterbury branch of the Hotel Workers’ Union, Mr Martin Moodie, said any action taken would be the first for workers covered by the award. Workers covered by the award were among the lowest-paid in New Zealand largely because of the high proportion of

women and casual staff. Action could be directed at franchised fast-food outlets, licensed restaurants, and industrial cafeterias or any workplace with a bad reputation for staff relations, said Mr Moodie. A full strike, supported by picketing, was a possibility. although Sunday’s meeting would decide what form of action was taken.
