Budd withdraws from race
NZPA-Reuter London The South African-born runner, Zola Budd, has pulled out of the English cross-country championship at Leicester tomorrow to avoid a potential clash with anti-apart-heid demonstrators.
Budd, who broke the women’s 3000 metres indoor world record last week-end, was forced off the course by demonstrators during last year’s race. “I understand there could be another demonstration and as it is a
selection race for the world championship I don’t want to risk spoiling the chances of other competitors,” said Budd. Budd still intends to defend her world crosscountry title in Switzerland next month.
