Angora goat prices down
PA Invercargill Values for Angora goats dropped 25 to 30 per cent on pre-December levels at two auctions at the Invercargill showgrounds. A purebred sale was held and a grade 3 and grade 4 doe, kid and wether sale. While prices may have eased from levels last year, well bred animals continued to sell well at both sales, and were generally on a par with those of recent northern sales.
The prices in Invercargill appear to reflect the uncertainty over the proposed new standard values for livestock announced in the Government’s December economic package. The president of the Southland branch of the Mohair Producers’
Association, Mr Ray McEwan, described the lower prices as “a good thing.” He believed more people would now come into the industry as a result. Well bred animals still attracted good prices, he said, a fact that reflected continued confidence in Angora goats and mohair production. The top price at the purebred sale was $17,500 for a doe. A number of passings in all classes was made at the sale of g 3 and g 4 does, kids and wethers. A range of prices was: g 3 does $525 to $1000; g 3 doe kids $3OO to $600; g 4 does $2OO to $575; g 4 doe kids $l2O to $275; September born, $400; wethers and wether kids, $25 to $BO.
