Rise in demand for passports

PA Wellington Passport applications have increased 20 per cent in the last month as travellers take advantage of discount fares offered by Qantas and Air New Zealand. The Wellington regional office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said the number of applications has risen from 750 to about 900 a week. The regional director, Mr Richard Stubbings, said this increase had also occurred in the four other regional offices. “We are extremely busy,” Mr Stubbings said. “The discount fares have certainly increased our workload.” Mr Stubbings said that if the airlines continued their discount fares, the office might need more staff to cope with the demand. The standard period required to process a passport is three weeks. Exceptions are made for compassionate reasons, such as a death of a family member overseas or for business reasons.
