Norfolk Bard at Woodville

Special correspondent Wellington The Awapuni trainer, Laurie Christensen, is having a pretty good spin at the moment and his run of form could continue at the Woodville Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow with Norfolk Bard in the Bolton Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double. The two-year-olds, Auto Air and Idyll Times, have been successful from the stable, and at Awapuni last week, Norfolk Bard scored a stylish win in the Gosnell Highweight, over. 2200 m, the same trip as; tomorrow’s test, and he won in convincing manner.

Norfolk Bard has had his problems in getting into the starting gates, but the use of a hood before the starter lets the field go has overcome this and he has made fair beginnings at his last two efforts.

Over 2200 m the start should not be that important. Noble Khan and Bullet Proof may be the best of the others. Noble Khan won at Woodville last month the class three Borthwicks Handicap (2000 m and has gone on to be placed in two Wairoa outings since.

Bullet Proof won three in a row, his most recent on the second day of the Wairoa meeting. Kerry’s Mate, Jirob and El Marino, which fell at Rotorua, may be the best of the others. Sir Vigilant dominates the second leg of the double, the Woodville Pharmacy Handicap. The four-year-old, which has had his share of troubles, won both the Wellington Derby and the St Leger last year. He has raced only once since, at Avondale last December, and at this stage a Sydney Cup

Tomorrow’s distance of 1600 m is hardly his forte and the best chance in the race looks to be the Otaki gelding, Middleman. He has won four of his 11 races and looks above average. Tippler and Grand Gaffe, if they start, will add interest. Tippler won the hack stayers at Te Rapa on Tuesday. He is still capable of a handy 1600. Grand Gaffe, at the same meeting, beat all but the promising Waverley Star. His record this season is two wins and two seconds from four outings. He won fresh at Woodville last month then at Tauherenikau on Waitangi Day. In between he was second at Awapiini behind the useful Shades of Dark.
