SIDELINES
ROBIN ESPIE, a qualified lawyer, professional squash coach, and former newspaper reporter, will bring plenty of enthusiasm to his new job as executive director of the New Zealand Squash Rackets Association. Espie, aged only 29, will take up his appointment on April 21 as the replacement for the retiring Bill Murphy. The former Nelson man, who represented New Zealand at the 1979 world teams’ event in Australia, has spent the last few years coaching in Germany. His new base will be Tauranga, where the N.Z.S.R.A. has its offices. CONSISTENTLY STRONG performances in several events enabled the Taylors Mistake competitor, Simon Davis, to win the Radio Avon trophy as outstanding lifeguard at the Canterbury surf lifesaving championships last week-end. Davis accumulated 25 points from the ski events, the malibu board, the march past, sixman rescue and resuscitation, tube rescue and taplin relay. He finished five points ahead of his club-mate and Canterbury representative captain, Lars Humer. It is the third year the award has been made, the winner in the first two championships being a Taylors Mistake junior, lan MacDonald. The top junior at this year’s event was Peter Walker, of North Brighton. AN UMPIRE’S BOAT did not follow a race quite as closely as usual during the recent Lion Brown regatta at Kerrs Reach. The speedboat flipped and sank at the 1000 metre mark, one of the deepest parts of the course. After some unsuccessful attempts the boat was eventually recovered by rope.
