999 call in vain
NZPA-PA London Two elderly women died in a fire after one managed to make an emergency 999 call, but was too choked by smoke to give her whole address. Coughing and with a faint voice, she said there was a fire at High Street, Bembridge, Isle of Wight. Firemen driving up and down the High Street could find no sign of a blaze, and it was not until the 999 call was traced that they were directed to Old Garth House. After forcing their way in, they found the telephone receiver off the hook. The victims were Mrs Gladys McKinnon, aged 76, and Mrs Frances Brookes, aged 74, both of whom are thought to have been overcome by smoke. Attempts to resuscitate them failed.
