Burglar, aged 9, now in custody

The Social Welfare Department has taken custody of a boy, aged nine, who committed 12 burglaries in Christchurch this week after running away from his foster home. The boy was too young to be prosecuted, said a spokesman for the Papanui police. Most of the burglaries were committed in Bishopdale and involved cash. In one instance the boy took a fishing rod. The spokesman said that the boy ab-

sconded from his foster home several times in the last fortnight. He again ran away from the foster home on Monday, soon after being returned there by the police after he was caught in a house in Johns Road. The boy had a history of burglary, theft, shoplifting, and absconding from care. He was once apprephended by the police while he was wearing gloves and carrying a screwdriver.
