Decision made —Mr Elwood

The Local Government Commission has decided on its proposal for local government reform in Christchurch. It will not make the proposal public until a meeting on February 19 when the chairman, Mr Brian Elwood, will tell Christchurch councils. Mr Elwood said yesterday that Christchurch’s reorganisation had been discussed by the commission at meetings in Wellington this week. The Christchurch commissioner, Cr Vicki Buck, had not taken part in the

discussions, he said. The proposal was the commission’s rather than his own, Mr Elwood said. He would not comment on the proposal until February 19. The commission had “got through a mound of paper,” Mr Elwood said. It has already met for two days and will meet again tomorrow.
