Charneys land may be leased for forestry
Christchurch Drainage Board land at Chaneys may be leased to the Christchurch City Council for forestry.
The 38ha had been held by the Drainage Board for many years in case a sewage-treatment plant was needed in north Christchurch, said the chairman of the board’s operations and services committee, Mr Colin Russell, yesterday. Investigations proved the cost of building a plant would be too high, and so domestic sewage was piped back to the Bromley treatment
station. The Canterbury Frozen Meat Company made other arrangements to discharge its treated waste into the Waimakariri River. This waste is piped over part of the land. The City Council was now interested in taking the land back as the Drainage Board would not use it for a treatment station in the “foreseeable future,” said Mr Russell. The committee recommended that the board and the City Council discuss options, such as leasing the land for forestry.
