Scared woman hid in lavatory
PA Wellington A woman employee of the Social Welfare Department hid in a lavatory when threatened by a man who was complaining about his dole payments, the District Court in Wellington has been told. Rongotoa Francis Elkington, aged 25, unemployed, admitted a charge of intimidation and was remanded by Judge Kerr to May 9 for sentence. Sergeant Max Grey said that on January 7, Elklngton became abusive and used obscene language while speaking to a woman employee of the Social Welfare Department on the telephone.
Sergeant Grey said Elkington had then threatened he would go to the department and smash the complainant’s head in. Five minutes later he went into the office where the complainant was working and started to abuse and threaten her.
“The complainant was scared that he was going to hit her,” he said. “When he started talking to somebody else she went and hid in the toilets. She then hid until Elkington left the premises with the police.” Sergeant Grey said Elkington had said he was angry because of problems with his dole payments. Elkington had said he had not threatened to smash the complainant’s head in but had threatened to kick down the office doors.
The Judge told Elkington that the Court would be influenced by his behaviour during the period of the remand.
