Otago hospital workers vote

PA Dunedin Otago hospital cleaners, kitchen staff, and orderlies have issued 14 days strike notice. Mrs Beryl Peterson, secretary of the Otago Hotel, Hospital and Restaurant Workers’ Union, said a strike would “virtually close the hospitals.” Mrs Peterson said yesterday that most staff at Dunedin, Wakari, and Cherry Farm hospitals had voted to strike at meetings held on Monday. The meetings were part of a series being held throughout New Zealand to discuss support for striking kitchen staff at

Northland hospitals. The contract for housekeeping (cleaning) at Dunedin Hospital was due for renewal in August last year. At the time the union noted that the tender document the Otago Hospital Board circulated included specifications affecting housekeeping domestic staff. The union said the board did not require domestic staff it employed to perform such duties. Mrs Peterson said that because there was no right to be represented in contract negotiations which affected their employment, hospital workers had been and would continue to be disadvantaged.
