Wilful damage admitted
PA Tauranga A tuna bomb which exploded in a men’s toilet at the Papamoa Tavern on February 7 was one of three similar blasts that night, the District Court at Tauranga was told on Tuesday. The first bomb des-
troyed the porcelain bowl of the public bar toilet, Judge Rice was told. Other tuna bombs (explosive devices used in commercial fishing) exploded in the tavern carpark and in a private letter-box.
Robert John Eynon, aged 28, a self-employed
bushman, of Te Puke, and Grant John Wi, aged 23, unemployed, of Maketu, admitted wilfully damaging the toilet bowl and letter-box with explosives. A third man, John Martin Hoogstraten, aged 22, a labourer, of Pongakawa, denied the same charges and was remanded to May 6 for a defended hearing. Wi admitted two other charges of possessing explosives and possessing cannabis. Eynon and Wi were convicted and remanded to February 25 for presentence and reparation reports and sentence. They were allowed bail of $5OO.
