Basketball tour off
PA Wellington The planned tour of New Zealand by the Russian national men’s baskeetball team in June has been called off. The New Zealand Basketball Federation’s executive director, Joe McLeod, said that communications with Russian basketball officials had “simply dropped dead” and advice had been received that the team
would no longer be coming. Mr McLeod also said that plans to stage a transTasman club championship, involving four teams, had been scrapped. He said Television New Zealand, whose cover of the March 1-2 event was vital to its financial success, could not commit equipment, owing to the clash with the Queen’s visit.
