Bill Skelton moves
PA Levin The former champion jockey, Bill Skelton, has bought a four-acre property opposite the Levin racecourse to expand his training activities. Skelton currently has only two horses in work and wants to build his team up to around 12. Skelton, who won the New Zealand jockey’s premiership on seven occasions before retiring from riding at the end of last season, has already tasted considerable success as a trainer, winning the Auckland Cup in 1965 with Lucky Son which he also rode. \ More latterly, he has
been successful with Diamond Prince, Poetic Justice and the Otehi Bay gelding, Scorching Bay. Skelton only combined regular training with his riding in the closing stages of his riding career but practically every horse he has had in his care has been a winner. In addition to the two horses he has in work, Poetic Justice, who has won five, and the unraced Lady Claudia, Skelton is also breaking in yearlings by Brauner, Tono Bungay and Sir Fleet
He said he expects building on his new property to be completed within the next few weeks.
