Few qualify at Ashburton
Qualifying proved difficult at the Ashburton trotting trials on Tuesday when a blustery north-west wind came up for the horses to face twice over the 2400 m. The first two heats had the best of conditions, but even then only the winners qualified. Percussion had to come back to beat the interestinglybred Allais (Stanley Rio-Alla-kasam) in heat one, and Captain Volo sat parked for most of the race before winning heat two, coming the last 800 m in 61.55, the best among the qualifiers. The best time was that of Damp Destiny, which came home at a great rate to win in 3:14.6. Bay Wood was the only trotter to trot all the way
and was well inside the required time. The mobile qualifying events used the new Ashburton mobile start which was trialled earlier at Oamaru. It went without blemish, but only Sybil’s Dream qualified. She showed speed in the run home to get two seconds inside qualifying time. Best time of the day went to the CO pacer, Lumber Advice which won under a hard drive for Patrick O’Reilly, while the best last 800 m time of 59.7 s went to the Stan Williams-trained Rapa Eagle, winner of the Cl and faster event.
