F.I.F.A. clamps on Kuwait
NZPA-Reuter The Federation of International Football Associations has suspended Kuwait’s membership and given it 15 days to hold elections for a new board for the Kuwait Football Association.
The world football governing body announced its decision in a telex sent to Kuwaiti football chiefs. The decision comes after investigations by a F.I.F.A. legal committee into what the international body says are Kuwaiti violations of its regulations.
F.I.F.A. banned Kuwait from all internafiphal soccer contests last month amid turmoil in the local
administration of the game rooted in alleged misuse of funds. A long-running row over allegations of financial and administrative irregularities in the K.F.A. led the Social Affairs Minister, Khaled al-Jumeian, to replace the association’s board last November. The new board was forced to enlist foreign referees last month to break a five-week sympathy strike by local officials. Mr Jumeian has urged F.I.F.A. to reconsider its decision. He said the suspension was "not fair to Kuwait and should not be ignored.”
