Yachtsmen to co-operate

NZPA-AAP Fremantle Four North American syndicates challenging for the America’s Cup plan to gather for a co-operative work-up series. The syndicates — none of whom has chosen to sail in the world 12-metre championship — will sail together on Monterey Bay, south of San Francisco, from late April. They are the Canada II syndicates, Saint Francis syndicate, of San Francisco, the Eagle syndicate from Newport Harbour and the Heart of America syndicate from Chicago. Heart of America’s skipper, Buddy Meiges, said that the four would probably sail an alternate match race series. “This should bring us up tp a level much

quicker than if we were sailing alone,” Meiges said. Eventually the four syndicates will compete against one another and 11 other syndicates for the right to challenge for the America’s Cup. While they are on Monterey Bay the sailors should co-operate easily, Meiges said.

“I look forward to quite an open relationship with these other four syndicates.” The Heart of America group’s winged keel yacht, developed with tank testing and computer flow simulation, will be christened in April “even if we have to break the ice on Lake Michigan,” Meiges said.
