Army wife abuse
Sir,—From the response to articles and correspondence in “The Press” since this subject was raised by the anonymous Army wife, it appears the real point is either being missed or ignored. Many cases of wife and child abuse, molestation, sexual attacks and deviation which, if occurring in the civilian sector, would be subject to investigation by police and a court case, when occurring in the Army, are being smothered by commanding officers or camp commandants, who do not want their reputations as commanders tarnished or prospects of promotion jeopardised. This smothering can be achieved by isolation, coercion, outright threats or “discreet” postings, often isolating the woman further from the help of friends and relatives. I know of many such cases. There is no provision in military law for the protection of soldiers’ families, with only remote chances of
access to civil law and Army wives are “discouraged” from making public statements op Army life. — Yours, etc., J. FLOWERS. February 6, 1986.
