Japanese films to be shown
The Consular Office of Japan will hold a short film festival from next Thursday to Saturday, in the Canterbury Museum lecture theatre. Two of the three films feature Tora-san, whose thirty-sixth movie opened in Japan last month. Tora-san is a “tekiya,” an itinerant merchant who travels throughout Japan encountering love, laughter and tears. His free spirit and love of
others seems to have captured the hearts of Japanese audiences, who live in a highly controlled and bureaucratic society. “Hearts and Flowers for Tora” screens on Thursday and “Tora-san’s Shattered Romance” on Saturday. The third film, “Jongara,” takes place in Aomori Prefecture, Northern Honshu, wih a background of local folk music
and scenery. It affords the opportunity of seeing a comparatively unknown part of Japan. Cultural films will also be.shown, on folk music, labour relations and the 1975 tour of Japan by the Queen and Prince Philip. All the feature films are subtitled, and admission is free. Full details will be given in next week’s entertainment page.
