An Irish charmer
Expatriate New Zealander, Sam Neill (left), and Maeve Germaine star in “The Country Girls,” which will be previewed at the Academy cinema on Sunday. Edna O’Brien adapted her autobiographical novel for the screen, and the director, Desmond Davis, has attempted to capture visually the “elegant simplicity” of the writing. “The Country Girls” was filmed entirely in
Ireland, with an Irish cast except for Neill, who was Irish-born him-
self. Young unknowns were cast in the leading roles of two friends who leave their village and convent school background for cosmopolitan Dublin. Ms O’Brien was enchanted with the young
actresses, Maeve Germaine (Kate) and Jill Doyle (Baba).
“They are so thirsty for life,” she commented. “Watching them play their parts they make me feel not nostalgia, but the need for a second chance. I think we all want a second chance: when you’re young you
don’t realise you’re ' young.” ■ “The Times” critic was ' enchanted with the film’s : “pure and unadulterated charm.” . ” , “Deceptively modest, thoroughly satisfying,” said the “Guardian.” New Zealand audiences agree: “The Coun- ‘ try Girls” enjoyed a 12week run in Wellington, >• and 10 weeks in Auck- i land. It begins Its Christ- >■ church season next Fri- *' day. r
