Maoris want more say

PA Tauranga Tauranga’s Maori community is pushing for greater involvement by Maori people in national organisations such as the social Welfare Training Council. The Tauranga Moana District Maori Council’s vice-chairman, Mr Rennie Ormsby, said Maori people should be seen to be participating in organisations which had a direct or indirect effect on their lives.

“This Social Welfare Training. Council for example has 10 members but we believe the Maori voice, if heard at all, is muted at present,” he said.

"The Wellington-based council sets down the training procedures for all the social agencies, and we believe it is necessary to have a good Maori input to ensure that some degree of Maori values is incorporated into the training.

"After all, Maori people make up at least 12 per cent of New Zealand’s population so it is only just we should have an appropriate voice on a council which affects Maori lives.”

Mr Ormsby said the Tauranga Maori Council had a candidate in mind' and would approach the training council.
