Britain ices up in big freeze

in London It was so cold In London this week that on at least one morning diesel fuel turned to “sloppy jelly” in some of the city’s double-decker buses. Empty buses and trucks were abandoned at roadsides on Monday until temperatures rose slowly to about —2deg. C by 10 a.m. Overnight it had been —9deg. at Heathrow and not far away at. Liphook, in Hampshire, it was —lB.sdeg. C, the lowest temperature for 40 years. Week-end snow in south-east England was | frozen by the falling temperatures. Railway line
points froze, vehicle locks iced up, and freezing fog in many parts caused problems for London’s three million commuters, most of whom were late for work. Sheet ice, burst water mains, and traffic accidents added to the nuisance, while the “peephole brigade” — motorists who only clear a small area of their windscreens before leaving home — came in for severe criticism from the police. A Weather Office spokesman said conditions were caused by a patch of cold air from Europe catching the tip of south-' east England.
